Wireless Gigabit Ethernet : Oregon Judicial Department
The Story The Oregon Judicial Department was doing something that is more and more common these days: moving their IT staff to a centralized facility. This group is responsible for managing the local and wide area networks connecting all of the courts in Oregon to their mission-critical services.
The Challenge
The problem was that the new facility, located a few blocks across town, was not connected to Oregon Judicial’s GigE backbone and fiber services would not be able to be provisioned for weeks if not months after the move-in date. Also, new fiber optic service would require a significant investment in the initial build and a monthly reoccurring charge. However, high-bandwidth, ultra-high availability, low latency and strong security were absolute requirements. Wireless seemed to be an option, but there was no direct line-of-sight between the existing network and the new facility.
The Solution The Oregon Judicial Department selected ezWireless to design and implement a solution to deliver Gigabit Ethernet performance with at least 99.999% availability. To accomplish this, ezWireless developed some alternative paths that each included an intermediate “hop site” that would establish a Gigabit Ethernet link by hopping around the obstructions. Oregon Judicial selected the BridgeWave AR60 product at the recommendation of ezWireless so that during periods of intense rainfall the radio would switch to Fast Ethernet rather than going into a link down state and meet the State’s requirements for availability, throughput, and latency.
