The Challenge
Panic Inc. is a company that produces “Macintosh software that rocks!” Panic’s “creative flow” has always been running,at full speed; unfortunately, their “connectivity flow” was not. Panic’s software portfolio includes; Audion, Transmit, Desktastic, CandyBar, Unison, Stattoo, and more! With web graphics, software builds, and beta operating systems flying all over the place, Panic Inc. was on a one way DSL train to overcapacity land. And, at the same time, the company was rapidly growing which meant an office upgrade and the need for a faster connection to their server.

The Options
Facing the immediate demand for more bandwidth, connectivity speed and growth had them, well, almost in a “panic.” The first two options available to Panic Inc. were daunting. Trenching fiber across a busy downtown Portland, OR street could cost $100,000 or more and take months to complete (assuming the city would even allow it). The lost opportunity costs, business disruption and potential down-time made owning their own fiber prohibitive. Alternative two, although potentially faster and less costly upfront, actually would cost more in the long run and not provide them with anywhere near the bandwidth they ultimately needed. Signing up with a local service provider for bundled T-1 lines carried a very hefty recurring monthly fee (ad infinitum) at a very high cost per gigabit and only a fraction of the capacity they needed. The third option would be to use a point-to-point wireless bridge to access the servers from the new office and increase their bandwidth..
